(Montreal Heart Institute) The surgical team at the Montreal Heart Institute achieved a North American surgical milestone on May 1st with a sutureless aortic valve replacement through a thoracic incision just 5 centimeters long. The two patients in their seventies who underwent this innovative procedure, which was performed by cardiac surgeons Denis Bouchard and Michel Carrier, were doing well only one week after their operations.

Tiny tool can play big role against tuberculosis, UF researcher finds

(University of Florida) Using the traditional microscope-based diagnosis method as a starting point, a University of Florida lung disease specialist and colleagues in Brazil have devised a way to detect more cases of tuberculosis. The new technique involves vacuum filtering a sputum sample treated with household bleach and other simple chemicals. In tests of patients suspected of having TB, the filter method detected more cases.

ACP urges HHS to consider using SNOMED-CT for coding of clinical problems

(American College of Physicians) The American College of Physicians (ACP) today urged the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to use the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) implementation delay to consider specifying the use of Systemized Nomenclature of Medicine -- Clinical Term (SNOMED-CT), rather than ICD-10, for coding problems in all situations. ACP's recommendation was part of a letter to HHS Secretary Sebelius commenting on the ICD-10 proposed rule compliance date.
