Global Research Opportunities in Health

Location: Various international

The goals of GROH are to encourage interest, learning and leadership in global health issues amongst 1st year medical and dental students by providing new opportunities for global health initiatives. It is anticipated that this program will contribute to the student's health & social knowledge, skills & attitudes in a way that would not otherwise be obtainable in the standard curriculum in Canada. The structure of the program will be modeled after the existing Schulich Research Opportunities Program (SROP). Research will either take place in the setting of a developing country and/or directly focused on developing world health issues (i.e. UWO global health curriculum development, global health issues teaching tools, etc.) The research project will take place over 1 year, with the research component in the developing country taking place over 6-10 weeks as applicable. Projects and proposals are required to be structured, with a clear research question, methodology, timeline and outcomes.

Opportunity Dates:

Project design from June 2007-June 2008, placement for 8 weeks from June 2008-August 2008

Eligibility:

Students must be enrolled fulltime in their 1st year at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. One only award will be given to an applicant over the course of their enrollment. Applications will be accepted from individuals or groups (up to a maximum of 5 students), with only one award being granted per proposal. If joint proposals are submitted, the objectives must indicate the need for combined effort and collaboration. The project proposal must be related to health issues in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Students with novel projects or projects at currently active sites will be considered. Students are encouraged, but not limited to, returning to past project sites. Students should have a primary role in the research project.
