International Opportunities
So you've decided to travel the world and expand your medical knowledge. First off, good for you; many people do not consider these opportunities. However, there is a lot of planning that goes into an international experience and here are some key points you should remember:
- Thoroughly research your experience before committing. It is important you have an understanding of the organization and the work you will do. If someone you know has had a similar experience sit down with them and find out what they did all summer.
- Communication - It is vital to keep up communications through out the preceding year with the preceptor, organization, or group you will be working with. In foreign countries, conditions and people can change quite rapidly and keeping in consistent contact will help you keep updated on your experience.
- Go in with an open mind and remain flexible. Foreign organizations can operate very differently from Canadian ones and it is important to keep this in mind when planning your summer. Perhaps a better learning opportunity will pop up or the hospital you are in will request you work in a different department.
- Research all country requirements before leaving. Many countries require certain vaccinations or documents before arrival. Please research these details as it will make your transition to your summer opportunity much smoother.
- Be respectful of local practices and traditions. While many customs may seem strange to you, it is important to remember you are an outsider. You are a guest in a country and must always remember as such.
- Remember to keep communication (email, phone) with home while on the trip. This will alleviate a lot of stress for you and your family. Even the most secluded locations have some communication access these days.
- Most importantly, have a passion for the work you will do and the place you will be going. Your summers are few so make the most of them.
Keep these tips in mind when planning your experience and good luck finding one that is right for you!
