Ontario Opportunities

This is the Regional Section which encompasses many of the opportunities available to us in Ontario. There are many opportunities available in clinical, research, and volunteer capacities. We invite you to peruse the various sections to find a program or opportunity that interests you. While the standard program information is important logistically, we know that lifestyle factors such as accommodation, stipend, hours, etc. are just as important. To address those issues we have collected input from students who have participated in the various programs over the years to give you the inside scoop on what the projects are REALLY like.

Based on my experiences, as well as those of my classmates, I can say that many of the opportunities listed will be a fulfilling and enjoyable way to spend your summer. The programs are designed to give you an amazing experience from which you can build your clinical skills, delve into the exciting world of medical research, explore other facets of health care, and last but not least, to get a taste of what real world medicine may be like. If you are an Ontario resident and looking for something to do close to home, there are a multitude of possibilities as to what you can do.

Programs such as ROMP, SWOMEN, and NORMED offer a way for you to organize an elective in a community within each designated area. But don't forget that if you are interested in a program in a community anywhere across Ontario, you do have the option of organizing your own elective through the hospital itself. The same goes for research opportunities- the programs and studentships we have listed are not exclusive. The possibility of an independently set up job in a lab or your choice is always possible.

While the programs are generally well designed, it is up to you to make the most of your summer. If you choose to do clinical work, many of the communities you will be working in (especially in the under serviced communities in Ontario) will welcome you warmly. Take advantage of this and make your elective into what YOU want it to be. Interested in cardiac surgery? Tell your preceptor! Ready to try your hand at suturing? With some practice you just might be able to! The possibilities truly are endless.

There are so many opportunities available to us -- from medical research in Toronto to clinical electives overseas. This guide is designed to help you narrow down the multitude of choices until you find what interests and motivates you. Good luck with the search, and I hope you have an enjoyable and rewarding summer!
